The Phlod-Nar is the solo-project from Randolf Smeets. Born in The Netherlands in 1978. Starting composing and making electronic music from 1996, his early inspirations are Frank Zappa and John Zorn. This introduced him to a wide (and wild!) variety of music. Besides electronic music he composes pieces for solo instruments (mainly piano) and small ensembles, and he plays several instruments (piano, guitar, clarinet, percussion). The music he makes shifts naturally between techno and classical, improvisation and ambient, jazz and noise, electronica and acoustic, film music and composed music, and so on. Besides The Phlod-Nar he participates in many other (solo)projects, like his latest: The Mun Astronauts.

The Phlod-Nar is het solo-project van Randolf Smeets. Geboren in 1978 te Heerlen, Nederland. Puttend uit verschillende muzikale invloeden probeert The Phlod-Nar steeds vanuit het niets te beginnen. Uiteindelijk heeft dat geleid tot uiteenlopende resultaten (maar niet beperkt tot): ambient, (modern) klassiek, techno, improvisatie, drum ’n bass, film muziek, noise, jazz, etnisch, en nog wat. Meestal zijn een combinatie van deze invloeden terug te vinden in een enkele compositie. Sinds ongeveer 1996 is The Phlod-Nar bezig om muziek te maken én te schrijven. Ook gecomponeerde stukken (voor o.a. piano, koor, viool, cello) behoren tot zijn kunnen. Deze composities zijn vaak minimalistisch en meditatief (of dromerig) van aard. The Phlod-Nar heeft op het moment een aantal, op twee handen te tellen, Cd’s gecompileerd met zijn eigen muziek. Daarnaast speelt The Phlod-Nar de volgende instrumenten: piano, keyboard, (bas)gitaar, klarinet en percussie. In de toekomst zullen deze ‘real life’ instrumenten meer op de voorgrond treden, in combinatie met electronica, in het werk van The Phlod-Nar.
